The Boer War 1899-1902

This Monument was erected by Public Subscription In Memory of Samuel Charles Atchison who was killed at Rensburg South Africa on the 22nd February 1900 while in Active Service in the British-Boer War. Aged 24 years.

AT DAWN 16 MAY 1943, THE 9000 TON US TANKER ‘CITIES SERVICE BOSTON’ WAS WRECKED ON THIS POINT. DURING A RAGING SEA. THIRTY SOLDIERS FROM 6 AUSTRALIAN MG BN (AIF) WITH COMPLETE DISREGARD FOR PERSONAL SAFETY RESCUED THE ENTIRE CREW OF 62 AMERICANS. THIS MEMORIAL HONOURS THOSE WHO SHOWED HEROISM AND PARTICULARLY THOSE WHO PAID THIS SUPREME SACRIFICE
