Shellharbour City Council collection
The McCabe Shell Collection was presented to Shellharbour City Council by the McCabe family in the 1960s. The shells were all collected by Christopher (Christy) McCabe of Addison Street, Shellharbour, who enlisted in the First World War. He was awarded to Military Medal in recognition of his esteemed service at Villers-Bretonneaux and again at Peronne. On his return a welcome home was organised by the townspeople who presented him with a gold watch and chain which he wore with pride until his death in 1980. The McCabe Shell Collection was presented to Shellharbour City Council by the McCabe family in the 1960s. This clock was presented by the Shellharbour Rifle Club, to Sylvester and Irene McCabe on their wedding day in 1923. Two of Sylvester’s brothers, Christopher and Gregory McCabe enlisted in First World War. At the time Sylvester was employed at Shellharbour Quarry which was classified essential industry. On this basis, he was refused a release to join the AIF and joined the Citizen Military Force.
